These Seine-Scheldt impacts provide a response to European public policy to benefit regions and their inhabitants.

Our actions and contributions to European policy

An analysis of the effects of Seine-Scheldt has shown that the main impacts of the project were the pooling and massification of industrial logistics flows, the reinvestment of industrial activity along the waterways, the creation of a wide-gauge waterway grid network and the modernisation of the water transport, therefore offering the implementation of the following European policies:

  • Development and cohesion of towns and regions,
  • Development of foreign trade,
  • Ecological transition,
  • Re-industrialisation of regions,
  • Energy transition and saving resources.

Major actions in the regions

The effects of the Seine-Scheldt network are spread across 6 European regions: Normandy, Île-de-France, Grand Est, Hauts-de-France, Flanders and Wallonia.

In addition to the jobs created during the construction period, the creation of Seine-Scheldt will generate 40,000 sustainable jobs in these regions especially in logistics and industrial activities, inland shipping and tourism.

The network will enable the growth of water and rail freight especially through access right to the heart of cities and major seaports. Along the network, industrial and logistics facilities will promote the development of mass, storable renewable energy for the use of the various industrial sectors. 1,300 hectares of environmental developments will also be carried out close to the 1,100 kilometres of waterways in the network in order to further improve the local integration of the project.
